Cycle to Recycle challenge rolls in to Wakefield

Coca-Cola Enterprises employees get on their bikes for sustainability challenge.

Employees from Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) have undertaken a recycling awareness challenge with a difference, cycling 120 miles between the company's Wakefield factory and the Continuum Recycling plant in Lincolnshire as part of the company's 'Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability (CRS) in Action' week.

The ten participants in the 'Cycle to Recycle' challenge travelled to the recycling facility with a trailer of used plastic bottles, which were then manually added to the lines to be reprocessed into food grade plastic resin. The team of cyclists then transported this material back to CCE's Wakefield site so it could be used in the bottle manufacture process, becoming part of new bottles for GB shop shelves.

The Continuum Recycling plant is a long-term joint venture between CCE and ECO Plastics.

The site is capable of reprocessing nearly 50 per cent of all the plastic bottles collected in GB and, since opening in May 2012, has processed more than a billion bottles. Continuum currently supplies the Wakefield facility with the materials it needs to produce its PET bottles made with 25 per cent recycled material.

Danielle Epstein, Graduate Engineer at Wakefield and challenge participant, said:

"I was delighted to be involved this unique challenge, part of the Coca-Cola Enterprises CRS in Action week as well as our 25th anniversary celebrations in Wakefield. It represents a number of concepts that are so important to our company: active healthy living, sustainability and community. We are proud to support CCE's ongoing achievements in transforming recycling in GB by completing this challenging and helping to produce 25% recycled material bottles with zero carbon road miles!"
