Coca-Cola European Partners Celebrates 25 Years in Peterborough

Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) celebrated a landmark anniversary at its Customer Hub in Peterborough this week, with a special event for colleagues who have contributed to the site’s success over the past 25 years.

MP for North West Cambridgeshire, Shailesh Vara, attended the event alongside An Vermeulen, VP Field Sales at CCEP, and heard from employees about how the site has evolved over the last quarter century.

Since first opening, the site has grown from a team of around 45 people to an integrated hub of some 150 employees. Continually evolving its capabilities to help connect customers to CCEP’s products and services, the Hub now services over 100,000 customers, supporting shops, restaurants and pubs across Great Britain.

As part of CCEP’s ongoing commitment to supporting the development of young professional talent, the Peterborough Hub saw its first intake of apprentices in 2016 through a dedicated Field Sales Apprenticeship programme. CCEP will be continuing the scheme this year, offering a further six roles to apprentices in the local Peterborough area.

Offering alternatives route into the business such as apprenticeships ensures the Hub is home to a diverse range of people from different backgrounds, each with different ideas, skills and expertise – a key feature in helping to strengthen the site over the last 25 years. The Hub also works closely within the local community to support various charities and initiatives, from the Pride of Peterborough Awards to the regional Special Olympics team.

An Vermeulen, VP Field Sales at Coca-Cola European Partners said: “We’re very proud of our history at the Hub, supporting some of the world’s largest brands right here in Peterborough, and it was great to see so many of our colleagues celebrating this landmark occasion together. Our people are core to the success of our business and it’s very humbling to have heard so many happy memories and anecdotes from the business over the past 25 years. We are looking forward to seeing what the future holds for the Hub and how we can work together to continue supporting the local community in Peterborough.”

Shailesh Vara, MP for North West Cambridgeshire, said: “I was very pleased to celebrate Coca-Cola European Partners’ quarter of a century milestone in Peterborough with both current and former employees. Over the years the company has grown from strength to strength and as well as supporting shops, restaurants and pubs across the UK, the company continues to play a significant role in and around the city. It was a great pleasure to meet both current and former staff and to see first-hand how the Hub operates. I am particularly pleased about last year's successful Apprenticeship Programme and it is good to see that there will be more apprenticeships this year. I wish Coca-Cola European Partners every success in Peterborough for many more years to come.”

Case studies

Two of CCEP’s employees that have worked at the Peterborough Customer Hub ever since its journey began 25 years ago are Helen Mann, Sales and Customer Service Manager, and Sandra Cotton, Team Leader.

Helen Mann is a Sales and Customer Service Manager at CCEP’s Peterborough Customer Hub, and was one of the first people to walk through its doors in 1992 when it opened, joining as a Customer Development Rep.

One year later, her partner Rich also joined the business, working within the Peterborough team for ten years. The pair married in 1995 – the same year Helen was appointed as Team Manager – so CCEP has always been a huge part of their lives. In her current role, Helen manages a team of 25 people to help place CCEP products into outlets across Great Britain, including shops, restaurants and pubs.

One of Helen’s favourite things about working at CCEP is the work-life balance she has been able to maintain, enabling her to enjoy quality time with her husband and twin daughters. She has also benefitted from CCEP’s commitment to developing its people and has over the years taken part in several courses, including an Academy for Coaching Excellence (ACE) accreditation to become a qualified people coach. This has enabled Helen to harness her passion for working with people, getting the best out of her team and identifying different personal styles and ways of working.

Helen has also enjoyed seeing the business evolve in Peterborough over the last 25 years – growing from a dedicated telesales site of around 45 people to an integrated hub of departments, from new business and reporting to training and development, with some 150 employees. She thrives on working in an environment that is full of variety and feels energised working for such an exciting brand, where no two days are the same.

Helen is passionate about CCEP’s work in the local community, having supported various charities including Comic Relief and Children in Need. The hub itself has been used to take phone pledges for the Children in Need appeal, which Helen supported for several years, with her daughters also joining her to man the phones on one occasion. Helen has also worked with local schools and colleges recently to help students prepare for interviews, sharing valuable techniques and insights from the business world and putting her coaching accreditation into practice with local people.

Helen looks forward to being part of shaping the future for Peterborough’s Customer Hub and retains the same passion and enthusiasm for the role as she did when she first joined 25 years ago.

Sandra Cotton is a Team Leader at CCEP’s Peterborough Customer Hub and has lived in the local area for around 50 years. She joined the site when it first opened in 1992 and was attracted to the flexible hours on offer, making the roles accessible to a wide range of people including women like herself who were looking to return to work after starting families.

Sandra joined the hub as a Customer Development Rep, and quickly realised her passion for helping to develop and grow a team. Over the past 25 years Sandra has held various roles, managing the outbound sales, customer services, wholesale, special events and more recently the new business team.

Sandra’s favourite thing about working at CCEP is the mix of people she encounters, having formed lifelong friendships with colleagues from different backgrounds and life experiences. For Sandra, the Peterborough Customer Hub also has a very personal connection, as she worked there alongside her son Daniel Cotton for several years. He joined CCEP in the same role as Sandra did 25 years ago as a Customer Development Rep, before being appointed as an outside Field Sales Rep in 2013, and has this year celebrated the milestone anniversary of 10 years with the company. Daniel also met his wife whilst working at the Customer Hub, making it even more of a family affair!

Supporting the local community through the business is something that Sandra has immersed herself in, having volunteered as a mentor for the East Anglia regional final of CCEP’s Real Business Challenge – the business’ flagship enterprise competition – helping local students to develop their business skills. Sandra has also helped to organise events for the local Special Olympics team in Peterborough and supported initiatives such as the Peterborough Sports Awards and Pride of Peterborough Awards. Helping the local community in this way has given her a great sense of achievement and pride during her time at CCEP.

Another highlight for Sandra was when she worked as a supervisor at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, of which Coca-Cola was a sponsor. It was a fantastic opportunity for her to work with other teams across the CCEP network as well as seeing the athletes in action, and was in her own words ‘an experience she will never forget’.
