V Festival Staffordshire Goes Green With Innovative Recycling Scheme

Friday, August 26, 2011

Coca-Cola Enterprises Ltd (CCE) is bringing its award-winning recycling initiative1 to Staffordshire this week, giving music fans the chance to get involved at V Festival in Weston Park.

With the weather set to scorch/Despite grim forecasts of rain, a huge quantity of bottles of soft drinks are likely to be consumed at Weston Park as festival goers enjoy the music and entertainment. Swap for Swag helps ensure that as many bottles as possible are given a second life by inspiringfestival goers to get involved in the recycling process.

The scheme has already been a huge success this year, collecting over 65,500 bottles for recycling at Isle of Wight Festival, T4 on the Beach, and Underage Festival.

At the Swap for Swag shop, music fans can swap their empty plastic bottles for limited edition festival essentials made out of recycled PET.2 The Swap for Swag shop at V Festival 2011 will be located in the Coca-Cola Recycled Garden in the Main Arena and items including rain ponchos, picnic blankets and t-shirts will be available with the following swap deals:

Volunteers from Coca-Cola Enterprises, vinspired and ECO Plastics will be manning 30 recycling points around the festival ground to make it as easy as possible for festival goers to recycle, wherever they are on the site.

Festival-goers will also be encouraged to make their own recycled fashion accessories, have their photo taken in the CCE photo-booth; and then upload the photos onto Facebook.

Coca-Cola Enterprises' Recycling Director, Patrick McGuirk, said:  "Following the huge popularity of the Swap for Swag shop at V Festival in Chelmsford last year, where almost 24,500 PET bottles were collected for recycling, we are delighted to be bringing the initiative to Staffordshire.

"Coca-Cola Enterprises is committed to making recycling easier and more engaging.  We want to show people what a difference recycling can make and the festival environment is a great place to spread this sustainability message.  It's not just about recycling for one day; it is about inspiring people to recycle every bottle, every can, every day."

CCE's Swap for Swag shop will be rolled out at other major music festivals this summer, including:

  • Notting Hill Carnival, London - 28 August
  • Super Saturday, Clapham Common, London - 10 September

CCE aims to give all PET plastic bottles a second life - to take used plastic back, wash it, break it down and turn it into new PET bottles for the next round of festivities. CCE is committed to recover the equivalent of 100 per cent of its packaging by 2020.  In support of CCE's sustainability goals, the Swap for Swag baler and production office are powered by a solar generator and panels.
