Recycle Zones take flight at Manchester Airport
Manchester, June 2nd 2009: Manchester Airport today announced the launch of Recycle Zone within their newly refurbished airside terminals to further bolster the airport’s already successful recycling initiatives. The largest airport outside of London, the aim of the zones will be to recycle an additional 200 tonnes of passenger waste from departures per year.
The ‘Recycle Zones’, which are part of a collaboration between the airport, Coca-Cola Enterprises Ltd. and WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) will give the 22 million passengers that travel through the airport yearly, the opportunity to recycle their plastic bottles and paper whilst, literally on the move.
The airport has adopted the innovative scheme driven by Coca-Cola Enterprises and WRAP as part of an ongoing roll-out of recycling projects across the airport.
The first airport to launch the zones, Manchester Airport marks an important step in a three year vision of Coca-Cola Enterprises to create several high profile, high footfall Recycle Zones by 2011. Other locations will include major tourist destinations, shopping centres, and other international travel hubs such as Edinburgh Airport which will launch in the coming months. The scheme intends to build on the consumers interest in recycling at home and when on the move.
Sue Hodnett, Environmental Advisor at Manchester Airports says: “We’re extremely excited to launch Recycle Zones at Manchester Airport. We have always been enormously proactive in promoting the recycling of materials throughout the airport and we are sure that as the first airport to adopt this initiative, it will be a successful collaboration. The scheme helps us to take advantage of the passengers’ heightened cultural awareness of recycling and we are confident they will be making full use of these facilities.”
The 125 bins that have been specially designed by Wybone to airport regulatory standard, will be located in the terminals and departure gates to capture the 1 million plastic bottles and paper waste at the point of consumption. Newly refurbished at an estimated cost of £80 million, Manchester Airport see the scheme as not only encouraging people to recycle their empties but also to remind them to think about recycling as part of their everyday life.
Erika Coghlan, VP, Coca-Cola Enterprises, said: “We are excited about launching the first airport Recycle Zone at Manchester. The innovative way which the airport has chosen to adopt the scheme will help travellers to recycle during their journey and to understand how that counts as one way to help protect the environment. People have increased their recycling at home and at work, but it’s less convenient to recycle when you’re ‘on the go’. Recycle Zones make it easy for people to choose to recycle exactly when they need to - just when they’ve finished their drink.”
In partnership with recycling charity, Recoup, Recycle Zone offers up to 10 days technical consultancy to each participating location to enable them to adopt best practice for collection and recycling for drinks bottles and paper waste.

Recycle Now
Recycle Now is the national recycling campaign for England, aimed at encouraging more of us to recycle more things, more often and to understand the positive benefits of our actions.
Created and delivered by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) on behalf of the Government, Recycle Now was launched in 2004 and supports the achievement of recycling targets – most notably to help increase the national recycling rate to 40% by 2010 (currently at 33%)
Recycle Now encompasses an integrated mix of advertising, website support (www.recyclenow.com), schools activities and an integrated, broad-based PR campaign.
In addition, Recycle Now also works closely with key third parties including local authorities and retailers to deliver positive, consistent messages to the public at national and regional level to encourage increased recycling.

Established as a not-for-profit company in 2000, WRAP is backed by government funding from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
WRAP works in partnership to encourage and enable businesses and consumers to be more efficient in their use of materials and recycle more things more often. This helps to minimise landfill, reduce carbon emissions and improve our environment.
Working in seven key areas (Construction, Retail, Manufacturing, Organics, Business Growth, Behavioural Change, and Local Authority Support), WRAP’s work focuses on market development and support to drive forward recycling and materials resource efficiency within these sectors, as well as wider communications and awareness activities including the multi-media national Recycle Now campaign for England. www.wrap.org.uk
