Schools

We are sometimes asked why we sell our products in schools. We recognise the need to reflect the requirements of young people, and the views of parents, teachers and other stakeholders, in determining our approach to schools. Young people need to drink liquids regularly during the school day in order to maintain their energy levels and concentration. Many schools do not have freely available water fountains, and the products we provide in schools therefore play an important role in school life. We believe that we should continue to offer our products to young people in secondary schools, through providing a wide choice of products and communicating active lifestyle messages wherever possible. Furthermore, in some cases our vending machines enable teachers to keep children in school who might otherwise want to leave the premises during the school day to buy products elsewhere.

We have had a set of guidelines in place governing our relationship with schools for a number of years, and these have recently been consolidated into our Education Code of Practice, which covers schools and sixth form colleges. This Code of Practice precludes us from supplying vending machines to primary schools. We currently have vending machines in many secondary schools in England, Scotland and Wales. No incentives are offered to secondary schools to encourage them to install our machines, and our sales force is provided with nutritional information on all our brands which they can share with schools.

As of September 2004, all our vending machines in schools have been modified to remove all branding from the front, replacing the existing fascias with graphic panels showing young people engaging in physical activity, and will offer a choice of juice drinks, water, diet drinks and regular carbonated soft drinks.
