Education in our local communities is very important to us at Coca‑Cola Enterprises which is why we have developed and funded three Education Centres at our plants in Wakefield, East Kilbride and Edmonton.
Each of these Education Centres aims to contribute to the local community by offering tours of the plant and education sessions linked to the National Curriculum.
At Wakefield, we have the capacity to offer two tours a day to 30 secondary students and we are aiming to have 5,500 young people there in the next 12 months offering them an insight into the operations at their local factory. Many are surprised to learn that Wakefield is Coca‑Cola Enterprises' largest soft drinks plant in the world. During the 2 hour session, they study the process of bottling 'from pre-form to pallet' and learn about recycling materials and waste reduction. With 10 production lines and 44,000m_ of warehousing and distribution facilities, there is plenty to see. There is also an interactive classroom for the students to pursue their group work.
Coca‑Cola Enterprises Ltd at East Kilbride provides a
unique support to teachers in Scotland by creating learning
opportunities outside the confines of a classroom. By
visiting our free Education Centre, young people will gain a
subject related insight into the processes at our factory.
Teachers will be provided with Education Packs, which can
then be utilised in the classroom to consolidate learning
gained at the Education Centre. The centre can take parties
up to 32, with six visits per week.
The high-tech Education Centre at Edmonton was purpose-built
in 2004 for students to get first hand experience of the
World of Work. Offering up to six tours per week to
secondary school students, it expects to see over 3,000
students passing through its doors over the next 12 months.
The 2 and a half hour session enables students to watch and
learn about the whole process of production from raw
materials to distribution. Students have the opportunity to
explore the factory floor and watch the six production lines
making a range of products in glass and plastic bottles.
Their visit will focus on health and safety, production,
management organisation, quality testing, marketing, product
design, factors influencing location, communication in
industry and much much more. Later on in the executive
boardroom, students can put their new learning into practice
with a range of problem-solving activities closely linked to
the school curriculum.
