Sir Bobby Robson launched the 2004 Cup in Newcastle at Heworth Grange school. It follows a similar knock-out format to the FA Cup, and youngsters are given the opportunity to play on Premiership pitches in the final stages of the competition. The final in 2004 was held at Chelsea's Stamford Bridge ground.

Research by the Institute of Youth Sport showed that over 70% of the teams created for the tournament continued to play together once the formal tournament was over, and that over half the schools providing extra-curricular sessions for the Cup continued to do so after the football season ended. 44% of schools entered a girls' team, of which 35% were specifically created for the tournament.
